DLP TV-- Toshiba 46HM84 vs. Samsung HLP4663W, or better????

Jan 8, 2005 2:48PM PST

I'm looking for a DLP, actually a TV around $2000, 46" (give or take a few). I'm assuming DLP is the way to go.
I was looking at the Toshiba 46HM84 or the Samsung HLP4663W. I read that the Toshiba has the better HD2+ processor, versus the Samsung HD3 chip. Does this make a big difference? Which TV is better?? Is there another DLP, or something else you'd recommend???
Thanks in advance.

Depending on how much cash you can spend I would look at the Mitsubishi DLP, it will cost you a little more but it is the best out there. You can even get a stripped down version of the 52525 wich is called the 52327. It uses the larger .8 DLP HD2+ chip instead of the .55 HD2+ chip you get in the Toshiba. The 63 series from Samsung uses the HD3 chip, which is an economy chipset from TI. I would look at first the Mits, then the 4674 series from Samsung before looking at the Toshiba.

i did look at the mitsubishi, and the 4674 samsung. There is no doubt they are better with that HD2+ instead of the HD3. I really don't want to spent $3000 on either one, though. Unless there is a huge difference.

so back to my original comparison, the samsung 4663, or toshiba 46HM84??? they are both about the same price, but the toshiba has the HD2+, but is the samsung still better even though it has the HD3?? i understand that the HD2+ is better, but why the toshiba is ame price??? wondering if they are scraficing somewhere else to make up for the cost.
Also, Iread in another post that the Samsung 4663 may have problems with XBOX?? Is this true??

Thanks again.

Well, the Toshiba is a slightly lesser quality set than the Samsung sets...(in my opinion) there were some compatability issues with the Samsung sets awhile back but I am pretty sure they have solved that problem. If these are the 2 tv's you have available in your price range, I would probably pick the Samsung. Again, being that it is the lesser expensive chipset, Samsung is on their 4th generation light engine where Toshiba is on their first. Also, give the Mits 52327 a look, it is a stripped down version on the 52525 and you can get it for 2699.00. I can't remember your original price range. Also, remember you will need to buy some good cables and a line conditioner as well, figure 10% of your purchase depending on what other equipment you own.
