Backweb can fall into the categories of either adware/spyware or legitimate software, depending on how you look at it. HP pre-installs Backweb on their systems for the purpose of distributing updates to its users automatically, without your intervention or permission. However, it can be configured to download unwanted software, display advertisements, monitor your keystrokes, and report information about your computer, which is why most list it as adware/spyware.
Personally, I'd leave it off your system since it can be more trouble than it's worth. Windows Automatic Updater will cover all required and most optional updates, and you can check HP's website every couple months (they rarely release updates) to see if there's any new updates you want to download.
If you do decide to reinstall Backweb, you can do so by running the Application Recovery program available from the Start Menu. Note that you may be asked to insert your HP Recovery System CD to complete the installation.
Hope this helps,
John
Not sure if i'm in the right place, but thanks to a spyware problem, i unwittingly deleted what was defined by the 'SpyCatcher' as a suspicious unknown file. I have a hp Pavilion a1030e with MicroSoft XP.
Now, i keep getting: "Could no load target dll 'C:\ProgramFiles\BackWeb\BackWeb Client\6.3.2.62\Program\BackWeb.dll' error code 5"
How do i reinstall such when i can't find it to reinstall? Thank you for your help and time. alan metz
