DLink 524 either does not works or is my pc.

Hi. I currently own a Dell 2600 Inspiron. I use a Belkin wireless external card in order to connect to a DLink 524 router. For some reason, I am having serious trouble in order to connect to my router. Windows is set in order to connect automatically, once the network is detected. In my case it does not happens. The router is only about 10 ft away and my signal meter tell me the signal is about 90% strong (I replaced the antenna with a more powerful one). However it seems there is no communication between the router and my card. I can stand just beside the router to get any input and nothing happens. If instead, I use the Belkin wireless connectivity manager, it connects at once, but most of the time I will get a weird IP address and no default gateway or DHCP. If i try to repair the connection, the computer does nothing at all. It crashes sometimes. If I use windows wireless manager, when it is performing the repair, it disables the card, but does not enables it, and then crashes. Might this be a problem with my pc. I appreciate any help provided for i do not know what to do. Dlink tech support has been useless and I have been on this for about 3 months.

It was almost dead on arrival until I updated the firmware. Now it works fine.

After updating the firmware....

as Bob as already suggested, I will reset the router to it's defaults. This along with disabling any security on the router will usually bring an IP/DNS address in the correct range. If not, I would connect an ethernet cable from the laptop to the router ot test it's networking ability.

Thanks for the hint ill try it to see what happens. Shall I also return the firmware to the previous version? I'll try to eliminate the WEP key and in order to avoid people stealling my signal, I will reduce the signal strength. Hope it works

I found the latest to work better.

With each passing version it's been getting better. I just about tossed this one out.

As to WEP and more. Get it to work FIRST, then lock it down. Many try WEP/other first without a working network.
