DJ Hardware Question

Jan 29, 2005 11:17PM PST

I was tasked to build a PC for a club DJ. Typically I have used AMD processors, but I remember reading a couple years ago that Pentiums were preferred for multi-media applications. Is this still true? This PC will be dedicated just to this function and will not be on the net. My plans were to use 512Mb RAM. It runs directly into one channel of a mixing board. Should I use dual sound cards to run into two channels for mixing, or have him do that through his DJ application.
I guess I'm asking a configuration you would use if building something like this without going overboard.
Thanks!!!

Any of the current processors will do fine. I assume when you say one channel that you mean a stereo channel. Since most MB have onboard sound you could use that. You can only use one sound card unless you get a pro type card like the M-Audio Delta 44 ( $199. retail) which has 4 input & 4 output channels. Since you didn't give a price range it's hard to help otherwise. John

Well, I built one. P-4, 2.6 Ghz, 800Mhz FSB, 512 MB RAM.
Can't remember the MB, but upper top end. Hooked it up, sounded OK. Yes, by one input, I meant that there is only one input into the mixing board. Found a software that does a good job of fading/mixing. The inputs aren't the issue, just want to make sure there's a good sound quality out. Goes into a mixing board then amp. I think we're going to be OK. I have a friend who has a higher end sound card. Going to throw that in just to see if it makes a difference. Bar manager didn't realize there was a speaker blown until I did some sound checks, so can't really judge it quite yet. Thanks a lot for your input!!!
