DIY terrabit Raid with DVD writer

Sep 21, 2006 12:05PM PDT

Has anyone tried to build their own Terrabit storage device. I am thinking that 4 x250GB drives and a high quality DVD writer would be nice to have to store a large amount of data. I will use this storage device on a Dell with a Winodows OS.
I am not sure what kind of case to use or where to really start looking to get an idea if this project is feasible.
Thanks for any input.

I was thinking of a pair of 500GB drives.

4 could be twice the wattage and more trouble to setup.

reliablity of 500GB Drives
Oct 2, 2006 7:59AM PDT

I haven't read much about 500GB drives having that great of reliablity. I was also thinking that while 4 could be difficult to manage if it went bad then I am only swapping 250GB instead of 500GB.
What are your thoughts on the reliablity issue or what HDs would you suggest I consider.
Thanks for the imput.

MTBF looks to be the same.

May as well move to the new 750GB drives now?

Can you show where hard drives are "reliable"? I maintain they are poor backup choices.
