Question

DivX Web Player auto update/upgrade

Nov 15, 2011 5:47PM PST

Hi

This is actually my first post to the very different looking MacFixIt Forum. I hope, therefore, I have elected to use the correct area for my question!

I am running OS X 10.5.8 and am looking for a way to disable DivX web player auto update/upgrade. I am running version 1.4.1.4 of the player. I realise this is not the latest version - it is, however, the most recent version that works in any way satisfactorily. I realise there is a per session/weekly/monthly update check option but ideally I would like to completely disable the check.

I should add that I have scoured the web for a solution with, obviously, no success.

Many thanks

Paul Archer

Side question

Side question: Have you considered any different players? Like VLC Player for example, which should be able to do pretty much everything Divx Player does, and then some. Is there some reason it MUST be Divx Player? I honestly thought they stopped developing that about a decade ago.

In VLC Player I see a checkbox for disabling update checking.

Hi Jimmy - thanks for your reply. Yes - I love VLC. Like you say, it's impressive as a versatile/reliable media player. My problem is that there are a couple of websites I use on a regular basis that only play DivX 'movies'.

Then I would bet on no to your answer, though VLC Player can play back Divx content, if the site for some reason specifically requires that player... You can check the login items part of the user account section of system preferences, and maybe you'll get lucky. I would expect every time you visit one of these sites it would just get put back, if there's anything there at all.

Otherwise just do what you've probably already done, and set the update check to the longest period of time possible to minimize the annoyance.

It may also be worth heading over to the VLC forums and asking if there's a way to get VLC Player to kind of masquerade as Divx Player. From a purely technical standpoint, VLC should be able to do the job as well, if not better.

Hi Jimmy - thank you again. There doesn't appear to be very much flexibility in the sites in question and I do, as you say, have the update check set to monthly. As the problem only exists on 2 of my 'favourite' sites, I shouldn't really lose much seep over it!

I shall, however, see what VLC have to say - they have brilliant support for what I think is a brilliant little player.
