Divx converter

I have a p4 2.26 ghz, 1gb ram, 100gb hd, 80gb hd, ati radeon 9550, abit ai7 motherboard with built in sound. I used dvd decrypter to rip the movie files from several dvd's. For some reason when I put the files into the converter and encode them it does not work properly. Some times it will encode only the first few seconds, or half the movie. What can be causing this.
