DISSENTION CANNOT BE TOLERATED

May 31, 2006 10:28PM PDT

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (the NOAA) is best known as the government agency that runs the National Weather Service and forecasts the weather. In addition to that, the NOAA charts and observes changes in the Earth's environment. Then there's also the NHC...the National Hurricane Center. These folks are the ones that go on TV and tell us about hurricanes whenever one is bearing down.

Have you heard? Al Gore has a film out there called "An Inconvenient Truth." This film says that Hurricane Katrina was the fault of global warming .. and that global warming will cause more hurricanes like Katrina.

So what do these two bits of information have to do with each other? Well it seems that some of the top names in the science of hurricanes don't exactly agree with Al Gore's film. That, neighbors, cannot be tolerated.

Chris Landsea is the science and operations officer at the NHC. He says that the Atlantic Basin, where hurricanes are born, is experiencing a natural 25 to 40 year cycle in hurricane intensity. Landsea says that there has "been no change in the number and intensity of Category 4 or 5 hurricanes around the world in the last 15 years."

the rest is good reading seems logical to me but then im not an enviro nutHappy

and the fact that it's wrong, still doesn't disentitle him to his opinion just as it doesn't disentitle you to yours. The country was founded on dissent as EdH should very well know, and it is the source of many of out best institutions.

I think it's the two of you who missed the point.

and substantial, like a University text, you'd know it too. Its not secret knowledge, and its not Liberally Biased as you seem to think, its just different from the pablum you regurgitate, which while not wrong is pre-digested by somebody else. Contrary to popular opinion I don't think i am the possessor of the Da Vinci code, but of the same knowledge available to anyone at the undergraduate level. And unslanted at that.

However far be it from me to disturb your delusions, though my son the incipient University student may disrupt them, if my hopes and wishes are fulfilled. He's a bright lad, and not subservient to his father's ideas, or anyone elses, which could lead to some interesting insights. The fact he writes like an angel doesn't hurt either.

You all seem to mistake anger or irritation for arrogance, I'm not arrogant, and I am more full of questions than answers. It is axiomatic that the more you learn the more sure you are of the holes in your knowledge, and I knew that 30 years before anybody mentioned it here. I have offered evidence, I have offered websites, I have offered books for free. I'm about out of ideas. Fortunately I don't much care what certain members here think because they have already revealed their opinions which I find unpersuasive, and with little back-up.

But thanks all the same for the bad mouthing and the gratuitous insults. They make great fodder for e-mails to friends, a number of whom use Speakeasy as a source for the direction for their lectures so that the same misinformation is not passed along to another generation.

Oh, yeah. And sorry for the longish posts. I was taught to write so people would understand if they chose too, or were marking the work, not merely to snipe.

Guess what, Rob...
Jun 1, 2006 2:53PM PDT

Guess what, Rob, a lot of us have numerous books. There's no reason to make a "big hairy deal" of it. I'm waiting with bated breath for one to arrive. A history of coin operated machines by one who should know, Marshall Fey, whose ancestor invented the slot machine. Why did I get it? Just for fun. Books can be a lot of fun, especially what I have refered to as my "dusty old books".

Dissent is not a founding principle
Jun 1, 2006 9:36PM PDT

Dissent for dissent's sake is meaningless.

If you need a reminder why some here react to you the way you do, bookmark this pompous post of yours for future reference.

Consider also, that many a university tet is also "pre-digested" by someone else. Since this thread is about dissent in science and bias in the global warming debate, I'll use the COUNTLESS examples found in my science texts that refer to global warming as fact. Subtle, to be sure, but if a text countered that it probably wouldn't make it past the editor.

As seen here...

I say this with the realization that I'll be flamed by the know-nothings, but I'd rather be a lone voice of sanity than a part of the chorus that dismisses science.

In other words, if you disagree with this statement you are a fool or worse. THAT is the prevailing attitude. And my reply to that effect was deleted with a couple others.
