General discussion

display size problem; toolbar color problem

May 2, 2005 9:44AM PDT

Something messed up my display after I installed a program called Webshots. After fooling around with it, I now have a display that is too wide, that is, the left and right sides of the display are off the monitor. And the icons on the desktop appear as they would looking in one of these fun house mirrors that make things look unduly tall and narrow. And my toolbar is the same color as the rest of the desktop, that is, a medium blue, instead of the white that I so admire, even though I deny being prejudiced.

I'm too tired to make sense so I'll just see where this goes.

Fixed too wide a disp;lay
May 2, 2005 10:22AM PDT

One problem I was having is that, for example, when I a website on my screen, I could barely see the X at the top right to close the website, and I could not see what was to the far left. I have fixed that by going to the graphics option.

But I would like to know how to change the color of the toolbar from blue to white, like it was before the trouble. And I don't get those arrows for reducing the width of the items on the toobar. Right now, the address bar takes up much too much room, but I can't reduce it.

I am sure I had toolbar problems in the past and got help on the forum. But when I search my name for posts about toolbars I get a zero. I wonder if the search program is working right.

Nope, it didn't work
May 2, 2005 11:40AM PDT

I thought I had fixed the problem of not being able to see the far left and far right part of what was supposed to be display on my monitor but it didn't work. Why in the name of Creatiion, or Evolution, depending on your politics, the computer programmers can't make things more simple for folks like me is beyond me. grandpaw

(NT) Opps, i must have been driking too much

if you were refering to your screen display. aka that images or website seems to go off screen and u cant see the side?

I think you adjust it from your monitor adjustment. The buttons u seee on the btm (usually) of ur pc monitor.
Depending on what graphic card u have, i think that can do it too.

not the right answer?

Unmmmm, go to 'Start' right click ur mouse, and then 'Properties' in one of those tabs u can adjust the display, and also colors of everything on ur desktop. right, anyone?

try 'View' , 'tool bars' -'customize..'

Try going to View, then under Tool Bars, click Customise.... (for firefox. but read on for IE)

From there a window will open with a posibble ad on so you can adjust the url/address bar. (for firefox)

If you are using IE, I strongly suggest you dont, but if u arent as anti IE/Windows as I am, try 'Crazy Browser' among the many others like Maxton, Avant. I pick Crazy browser (http://www.crazybrowser.com) well u have to admit the name is funny) but its a very small and yet power browser and as of April 4th, its no longer in beta.

same way on taking off or adding on icons/functions to the tool bar as Firefox. I remember the default would comes out with 3-4 tool bars, where you can just click on the most left of the tool bar line and brag it up to to put them all in one line, and you can adjust the size from here since it has the width/slider set by itself.

Good luck, and hope I actually answered ur questions.

Though I still prefer Firefox and the now a bit too overwhelming with the amount of optional ad on extensions and many arent well explained on what they do, or how to use it. Then there are some features that are great, but can be amazing if it was more all in one.

this is what crazy offers Happy

Tabbed Interface Web browser:It has the ability to open multiple sites and windows inside a single browser task. Browser tabs may be aligned at the top or the bottom of Crazy Browser and may be displayed on either one or multiple rows.
Full Windows XP Theme support. Cool!
Smart Pop-up Blocker. Cool!
This is the best pop-up Blocker - it blocks all the annoying pop-ups automatically! (so they say, but I had some issues with it)
No configuration, no black list. It is Smart Pop-up Blocker!

Security: This has full support for P3P (1st time see this and no idea what P3P means) privacy policy and zone-based security assignments.

Multimedia Data Loading: Turn loading of multimedia data on/off with just one click.

Multiple Engine Searching: Crazy Browser comes with many preconfigured search engines, but you can extend it to use your own.

Middle mouse button click on links open on new tab.

Hi, philiploh (did I get that right?)
May 2, 2005 10:39PM PDT

But don't ask me to pronounce it.

Well, I finally did what any normal human being with a working brain would have done right away. I used System Restore to get things back to where they were before I installed Webshots. Now, I've got to decide whether or not to give Webshots another audition. I'll ask Snapshot for some input about whether or not I can keep it from messing around with me like it did.

Thanks for your comments and your interest. I have Firefox and use it a fair amount, though I still use IE6 some, for example, when I use CNET since I can't get CNET to let me create a new discussion when using Firefox.

By the way, what is the story behind your name, or am I insulting you to ask?

properties

Go to your desktop and right click, select properties. This will bring up a settings option, and an appearance option, both of which can be tweaked to make the modifications you want. Hope that helped.--Neo

Unfortunately
May 3, 2005 10:38AM PDT

the Desktop Properties dialog box is neither self-explanatory or intuitive.

For example, when I went to Themes, it showed Windows Classic Modified. I clicked on Windows Classic and it made changes I didn't want, to I clicked menu arrow to go back to Windows Clasic Modified, but it was no longer there. I did get things back like I wanted and had them but until was has gained some expertise with the program it takes some hit and miss to try to get what you want. I'm sure there is an explanation, as there is also an explanation for most everything except human nature, but the programmer didn't think it important enough to pass on. These programs are designed by people who have completely forgotten what it is like to be feeling your way.

But, as I said, I used System Restore to get back what I wanted. Now there's a program I can understand, a little.
