If your problem just started today, restart in MS-DOS mode (if that's not in your shutdown options, then hit F8 frequently during a boot to get the Windows Startup Menu and select Command prompt only). If that doesn't work, find the file in the Windows folder named "MS-DOS Mode for Games" and double-click it.

At the C:\> prompt, enter "Scanreg /restore" and when the program opens pick the latest registry backup before today.

You might get really lucky and find it fixes both your display and your AIM problems.
