Display Problem

Nov 7, 2006 9:42AM PST

Hi All

I have a problem with the display of web pages where the fill colour in the background is missing which I have struggled to solve. All other colour works fine

It is on an aging sony laptop with an ATI Mobility Radeon graphics card running XP.

I have installed the latest driver to no avail. The screen works perfectly in every other respect

Am I missing a plugin or is a setting gone askew?

Thanks

Likely a browser setting...

Since it only occurs with webpage backgrounds it's most likely a browser setting issue, not something wrong with your graphics card. The fist thing I would do is try loading the same pages using a different browser, such as Firefox or Opera. Let us know which browser(s) the problem exists in and, if possible, name a couple of the troublesome webpages.

Sounds like the correct answer since he has no other problems with his Sony. Sony is a good product.

I for one switch between Firefox and Safari on a Mac as browsers
Anyone used Sea Monkey or VLC? How do they compare?

Thanks for the replies and apologies for missing the first one.

The problem occurs with Firefox and IE including their latest versions. I believe a similar problem does occur on a non-web app that being MS Money where the colour formatting is always missing when I open the program but when I set it it does change and stay that way for the time it is open in the session.

In terms of troublesome webpages - how about this one? At the top of the page the tips and tricks banner is there but the the rest of the coloured part of the banner including the bit around tips and tricks is missing.

Some buttons are missing altogether and most that are green are see through though the ones below this reply box while I am typing are OK

The pale green border around the post is missing as is the even paler green fill that is behind the texts

I have noticed that on IE7 there is a function to edit in MS Word. On forums when I do that the page opens in word with all the colours and shading in the right place

In FF2 which is my primary browser the error console goes berserk with a whole host of expected declarations and errors in parsing this and that.

I have Java and JS enabled and to allow webpages to choose their own colours and nothing that I know of in display preferences that is not currently set at default

Any help to resolve this would be greatly appreciated as it is a pain not to have forums and informational pages displayed in as easy to read format as possible!

Thanks

Two thoughts...
Nov 18, 2006 9:25AM PST

1.) Uninstall the J2SE Runtime Environment through add/remove programs and download/install the latest version through here. Once that's done, click here to download/install Windows Script 5.6.

2.) What security software do you have installed? Some can be set to block various content like that and Norton Internet Security has been known to do so under its own volition.

latest java version installed
Nov 19, 2006 3:23AM PST

Thanks for the suggestion.

The question of the latest Java came up elsewhere I d/l the latest version a week ago. I verified the installation from the your link and it confirmed it was the latest version installed.

I should mention that the colouring and function of java based web apps seem to be OK, it is the static rendering of colour and frames which is missing.

I am also noticing more and more formating problems with different non-web app's from programs I am running - from the non-display of coloured fonts in outlook to an emboldening of the toolbar icons in Word, Excel etc

I am leaning toward the solution being somewhere in the way the Operating system handles graphics rather than any specific program setting but am open to other ideas.

As ever any thoughts, suggestions or solutions are much appreciated

Thanks

security

opps missed the question about security

Norton was installed but I am currently using AVG. Could a residue of the Norton be hanging in there somewhere? I deleted it out with add/remove progs a while back but I know that doesn't always clean everything
