Question

Display brightness - adjusting + KB illumination

May 9, 2012 12:16PM PDT

When I am in my user account the screen brightness does not automatically adjust. Also the KB illumination does not come on.
It works in the Admin A/C. The settings of both accounts are the same.
Can anyone offer advice?
Thank you,
RoyalGala (a good apple!)

log into it.
Check to see if the keyboard illumination works now.

If it does, consider moving to that new account permanently.

If it doesn't, move back to the original account and try deleting the Finder Prefs

Wonder why you didn't feel it necessary to give us any real information about your problem machine.

Display brightness and KB backlight
May 10, 2012 6:54PM PDT

Thank you mrmacfxit. Yes I should have prefaced my question with: I have a Mac Book Pro running under OSx 10.6.8
I set up a new user account and as you predicted, the backlight came on, but at a lower brightness that the admin account. The screen however did not brighten when the room was darkened.

Another helpful hint from Jimmy asked if my web cam was enabled, yes, it is.

Still a mystery but only a small distraction, I still love my Mac, so much easier to use than Windows on a clone.
The apps are so intuitive too.
Thank you.

Did you

Did you by chance disable the webcam on your account? The ALS is tied to the webcam, and so if you disable that, it will disable the automatic brightness adjusting. The keyboard backlighting I believe is also tied to the ALS, so it doesn't turn on when you're in a brightly lit area.

So I would start my efforts with the webcam. Maybe you installed skype or some other program and used it to disable the webcam for example.
