Diskeeper 2008 Professional: Boot-Time Defragmentation

Mar 31, 2008 1:22AM PDT

Before I start, I would like to say that I've already searched the Internet for this answer. So far I can only find one related search, and that refers to the Diskeeper v9.0 and is still unsolved (last post in 2005).

I've received this message when running the boot-time defragmentation.

"Couldn't open NTFS volume; Most likely cause: couldn't get exclusive access"

"Diskeeper boot-time defragmentation cannot occur safely when another process is accessing the volume, so the boot-time job requested will not run. Try again later. Failed to initialize for volume C: -- volume probably not mounted or is not NTFS"

I've set the defrag process to defragment the MFT and paging files. When defragmenting the MFT files, it showed the above message, then restart the computer.

Can't get to the Diskeeper support as of yet, so am asking if anyone have come across this problem and have the solution. Appreciate if anyone have one.

NOTE: Drive C:\ the target for boot-time defragmentation, is in NTFS format.

Which Antivirus?
Mar 31, 2008 2:58AM PDT

Some install a driver prior to boot to the time that Disk keeper runs. To get around this, Total Defrag uses another method. It's not a bug in Diskkeeper so far. Diskkeeper will likely ask what antivirus, if you ghost or are running from an image, etc.

antivirus, or rather, internet security suite...
Mar 31, 2008 11:48AM PDT

I have Norton 360 installed (and expiring soon) in the computer.

Additional question: can BitDefender AV 2008 also cause the same problem? If so how can it be fixed?

Uh Oh, more trouble
Apr 1, 2008 3:20PM PDT

Now I can't defragment using Norton 360's PC Tune-up feature and Windows Defragmenter. And can't run the Windows Error Checking feature, even after rebooting the laptop by request.

Just to note, I did tick the box to run chkdsk (correct it if I'm wrong), but the process went straight to the defragmentation.

Lastly, I do have a (disabled) Diskeeper Lite that was pre-installed in my laptop.

That's a good clue.

I would uninstall both versions then install just your current diskkeeper. Not that it's a known problem with diskkeeper but how many times have we run into issues with new and old versions installed at the same time.

As to Norton 360 it does have it's own protections so it can have the issue noted and be the cause.

The big problem now is...
Apr 2, 2008 5:43PM PDT

I can't run the error checking process anymore! It appears chkdsk cannot gain direct access to the hard drive. This had caused a BIG jam on all my laptop's defragmenters.

Currently uninstalled Diskeeper 2008 Professional, although the problem above appears as it's cannot be fixed by this.

Again, Norton.

Installs a driver to protect itself early in the boot process. It also breaks system restore. I'm not a big fan.

Gonna drop Norton 360 by weekends
Apr 3, 2008 9:26AM PDT

I'm going to replace it with BitDefender AV and ZoneAlarm Firewall. Will see if the problem's fixed.

Problem appears to be fixed
Apr 26, 2008 8:25PM PDT

Yeah, I think it's really Norton products that have been causing this problem. But is there any fix available for this kind of problem?

Oh dear, accidentally clicked on the shortcut linked to install a Symantec software that was predownloaded into the system at manufacturing time. Now I can't use the chkdsk scan again.

I fixed mine.

Do I have to tell you? (Hint: No more Symantec software.)

Yeah, I know
Apr 26, 2008 10:17PM PDT

Appears that the manufactured settings of my ThinkPad T60 include a Symantec/Norton Security Solution software. Didn't realized it.

Man, I hate recovering to factory defaults of my laptop.

Ah... the problem has yet to be resolved
May 1, 2008 9:15AM PDT

I've recovered my system (once again) a couple of days back, and reinstalled all the components of my ThinkPad T60 program updates. Deleted the unnecessary installation files, including the preloaded Symantec Client Security installer.

But still, the problem persists.

I've searched all over the Internet for the answer, and tried a few steps. But the problem still persists. Despite even in Safe Mode, I still cannot run the chkdsk.

As of now, I cannot seem to access Safe Mode because of a method I tried from the link at the bottom of the page. Just for inquiry here's what I did then:

1. Ran cmd.exe as Windows is up and running.

2. Typed in "fsutil dirty set c:". Result: C: drive is marked dirty.

3. Restarted and booted to Safe Mode. A list of program paths appear and stop at a file name called Mup.sys (full path "multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\Mup.sys.)
NOTE: All the file names listed come from the exact path as stated above (except the Mup.sys)

4. Machine seems to load something in the background as it's stuck at the pathname at 3.

Your past history suggests
May 1, 2008 11:31AM PDT

It's your posting history that makes me think you've been playing with P2P downloads too much. Those cracks and pirated software often result in such a disaster zone.

Time to start over again?

Just to note, again
May 1, 2008 3:56PM PDT

I no longer play with any P2P applications like torrent clients on my laptop. I've said that I've run a recovery of my laptop a few days ago, and reinstalled ONLY the ThinkPad-related updates and patches. So, there's virtually no other softwares (except for pre-installed softwares and Diskeeper 2008 Pro) inside. Below is the list of softwares/applications that I have other than the Lenovo applications:

InterVideo WinDVD (Player)
Intervideo WinDVD Creator
PC-Doctor for Windows
Multimedia Center for ThinkPad Offerings (Sonic RecordNow)
Express Labeler
Diskeeper 2008 Professional

Time to toss Diskeeper?
May 1, 2008 8:34PM PDT

Sounds like it's not happy with your machine. By now you've discovered that defragmenting beyond the supplied tools and too often has little payoff. As to your use of crack software, I can only draw on your past posts and long discussions that you have some issues.

Once again...
May 2, 2008 12:01AM PDT

I no longer use any cracked software in any of my machines for quite a couple of months.

Regarding the Diskeeper problem, it had not occurred to me that it have any problem, as the last time I use the Boot-Time Defragmentation, it have no problem running chkdsk before.

Currently inquiring ThinkPad on resolving this issue. Hopefully it works.

Is this it?
May 7, 2008 5:15PM PDT

I was having the same problem. Did you happen to try expanding your MFT right before this started happening? I hadn't tried doing boot time defragmentation before that, but I started having problems immediately afterwards. I ran BartPE, but it didn't even mount the file system. Turns out that was because the partition table had errors in it. I don't know what the error was originally, but after some fenangling with PartitionMagic it's now about 2,000 sectors on my NTFS partition overlapping my ext3 partition. I'm backing up my files now before I try fixing it.

Diskeeper never gave me any trouble before Sad

solved the problem
May 7, 2008 10:35PM PDT

It's not Diskeeper's problem. It was a software in my Lenovo T60 that's causing the problem. I've heard that there's a file in relation to Rescue & Recovery v4.2 (latest at the time of posting), and this file starts BEFORE the Windows XP logo appears (from what I hear). It kind of locked the machine so no chkdsk process, boot scan (by anti-viruses) and even Boot-Time Defragmentation cannot touch the HD or the system folders.

Only other possible reasons I found are Norton/Symantec products or Spyware Doctor installed.

mutatedplatypus: Is it the Boot defrag from Diskeeper that causes the problem? Maybe you can try using System Restore to revert the situation. Happy

Not my problem
May 8, 2008 2:01AM PDT

I'm not entirely sure what caused the problem, but the problem is clear now. My partition table has errors: two separate partitions actually have overlapping sectors. I haven't tried defragmenting since this issue came to light, I'm afraid Diskeeper may use an unstable part of the partition. I think I turned off System Restore, but after I finish backing up my files with Rescue and Recovery (I already have a backup from when everything was working, and the recovery partition works, so I'm not totally outta luck) I'll try using the recovery console (installed on the bad partition) and FixMBR. If that doesn't work I think I'll have to restore my system to factory state then restore files from the backup I'm making now. Lucky for me, my external hard drive is still cranking along just dandy, so I have a bunch of recovery options available there.

I don't trust partitions
May 8, 2008 6:14PM PDT

and don't intend to do that to my 80GB HD.

Although, I'm interested to know this since you said you're using Rescue & Recovery: does it backup ONLY the HD and not other drives? Thanks in advance.
