Resolved Question

Disk Utility

Dec 10, 2011 10:20PM PST

Hi there.

I have only relatively recently upgraded my old Mac to OS X 10.5. It's running perfectly well and I am enjoying/utilising its new features. To be honest, it actually 'feels' it's running better than 10.4 Tiger which I had been using prior to this.

I have a general question rather than problem. I just wondered how Disk Utility's verify and repair functions are expected to run under normal circumstances? In Leopard, each sweep can last around 20 minutes with its actions appear exactly the same even when verified and repaired.

Under Tiger the operations were much faster with generally few changes.

As a footnote, my Mac was bought brand new with Panther installed and if I remember correctly that too ran more slowly than Tiger. I remember running DU after I upgraded to Tiger - the first few times I was concerned that it was too fast and wasn't doing its job properly!

So, why would there be such a difference in behaviour on the same machine?

Many thanks,

AOx

More stuff to check, perhaps.

I would not be too concerned about the length of time if takes DU to perform.

Thanks

Thanks mrmacfixit - that does make sense. Yes - I was referring to the permissions. The only thing is the same 'fixed' permissions come up time after time - always the same. Sorry if this is a stupid question, but why don't they stay 'fixed'?

Yes...

...thank you once again, I agree. In my early Mac days, when I was running Panther or Tiger (my apologies, I can't remember which), I do recall a similar situation (ie the same dozen lines or so that needed 'repair' but showed up time and time again). However, following a software update, these lines ceased to appear and DU ran as would be expected.

If it's OK, before closing the thread, may I ask if it is significant that 90% of the repair details pertain to Front Row? I only ask as Front Row came new to my system with OS X 10.5 Leopard when these persistent verifications/repairs first appeared.

Many thanks for your time and help,

AOx

Not really significant,

it used to do the same for me before Lion took away Front Row
