disk read error

I have a Lenovo laptop G550 running xp, but no disk,
DISK READ ERROR OCCURED
press ctrl+alt+del to restart
But no go with that, any ideas

download a utility ISO

and burn to disk. Boot to it and run scandisk or chkdsk or whatever utility it has to find, recover & mark bad sectors. You still might need to reload the MBR for XP using FIXBOOT and FIXMBR, but you'd need an XP CD to do it, or it would need to be on the utility disk you booted.

You could also download a Linux distro like Mint and get your personal files off the computer, even burn to DVD if wanted, or onto USB flashdrive before doing any work on the drive and OS itself. You can boot then from DVD or the USB drive.
