ECS 848P-A V. 2
256 SDRAM
3.0 P4 E
SAMSUNG SM-332 COMBO DRIVE
20 GIG WESTERN DIGITAL HD (OLDER)
FLOPPY DRIVE (DONT KNOW WHAT KIND (OLDER))
RADEON 9800 PRO VIDEO CARD
350 WATT POWER SUPPLY

I recently put together a computer with these parts. It starts up and i can get through the bios and then it goes to a black scree and says "DISK I/O ERROR INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ANY KEY". I have tried 4 different boot disks for windows 98 SE and have even tred to boot straight from the cd. The hard drive had windows 95 on it and workjed fine in another computer. What could be the cause of this error, and how could it be fixed?

say you tried to boot from a statr up disk do you mean that it did boot from it or it gave that message? If you chose floppy as your first boot choice and your floppy disc is good it should load all the tools you need to scan the registry etc...

Nak, What Preparation Have You Done?
Feb 8, 2005 9:16AM PST

You haven't accurately described what you have done to the hard drive to prepare it. Is this a new motherboard? If so, the old hard drive can't simply be placed into the machine and have it work. Have you partitioned and formatted the drive from a Windows 98 boot floppy? Windows 95 probably won't operate correctly on a new P4 processor and motherboard if it was placed directly from the old machine...

You need to have all the drivers for the new hardware, including the motherboard drivers..Do you have those?

You're installing Windows 98 on a P4 3.0 GHZ processor? Why? Have you got all the Windows Critical Updates for Windows 98?

Hope this helps and let us know more.

I have done nothing to the hard drive to prepare. I cant format or anything, because It wont boot from the floppy. It is a new motherboard. I dont have the drivers, ill get then and see what i can do. I am putting Windows 98 on it, because i dont have the money to buy windows XP.

Thanks for the info
hope i can get it toady

Try Formating your hard drive...if its not formated properly the bios will not detect it...

Re: boot problems

If the BIOS is set to boot from A:, and the floppy is bootable on another computer, and you still can't boot from it, there is something wrong with either the motherboard, or the cables, or the diskette drive. Replace the broken parts, that's the obvious solution.
