Disk Defragger

Mar 19, 2005 11:39PM PST

When I try using the disk defragmenter on my Windows Me, it gets to 10%, says something writes to the drive, then restarts, and does it over and over again, not going anywhere past the 10% mark.

And when I try to use the SpeedDisk from Norton SystemWorks, it gets to around 65-70% then says there is a lost cluster, sends me into the disk doctor, and while that runs, it gets to directory structure, and then restarts cuz it says something wrote to the disk.

For both instances of disk writing, I do not hve any programs running, so what is the problem? Please help!

Thanks to all in advance...

Here's the article I use if scandisk or defragmenting does not work in SAFE MODE -> http://support.microsoft.com/kb/222469

I've never had to resort to any other articles or methods,

Cheers,
Bob

defragging
Mar 20, 2005 7:51PM PST

I've had the same problem in the past, but without any other programs running the manual defragger eventually (2-3hrs+) defragged my harddrive.
In my experience the windows defrag is just not good enough, especially with today's need for a very regular defrag due to much more d/l'ing traffic, big segmented/fragmented files, etc.

Anybody know any other way round this? -I've heard some about automatic defragging.

Many people think they don't have

any programs running but, they do. A screen saver is just one program that can cause the defrag to restart over and over. If you are using Windows 95-ME, do a control/alt/delete and count the number of programs on the list.

Many have had good luck doing a defrag in the safe mode. Others close all programs running in the background before doing a defrag.
