Disk Defrag won't start in Win XP Sp3.

by maximum_g / January 24, 2009 9:40 AM PST

Hi,

When i click on the Analyse or Defragmnet button i get an error message saying "Disk Defragmenter won't start". I am using Win XP Home Edition with Service Pack 3.

I have tried turning of my Anti-Virus software and then trying the defrag but that didn't help.

I searched the internet and tried a lot of different things (like the things from this URL http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_defrag.htm) such as scanning my computer for viruses.

I have never gotten this error before so does anybody know what else can be the cause of it?

Thanks very much to taking the time to read my post.

Pleasr Try Running Error Checking/Chkdsk
by Grif Thomas Forum moderator / January 24, 2009 11:23 AM PST

Follow the procedures in the link below:

How To Run 'Error Checking/Chkdsk' On Win2000/XP

After running the tool above, then restart the computer TWICE, disable your antivirus program.

If that doesn't get it done, then please try downloading, installing, updating, then running a scan with the free antispyware tool below:

Download the free SuperAntispyware program and the manual updater from the links below, then install the program and run the manual updater to bring the program to current definitions.. Then run a full system scan with the tool and delete everything it finds.. If you can't download and install it directly from the problem machine, download it on a friend or family member's computer.:

SuperAntispyware
http://www.superantispyware.com/

SuperAntispyware Manual Updater
http://www.superantispyware.com/definitions.html

Hope this helps.

Well. In in Windows XP when i try to scandisk via Tools Pane in the Properties of C drive it says "Windows was unable to complete disk check".

When i try to do it via the Command Prompt by typing in chkdsk c: \f \r it asks me if i would like to run chkdsk upon restart i say yes then i restart the machine and it loads up just fine then just after the win xp logo finishes loading then it looks like it will run chkdsk but then loads straight into win xp about 5 seconds later.

Seems to point to a damaged hard disk.
