disk defrag won't run on XP

Jan 3, 2005 1:57PM PST

Hi people, I have had this problem for ages now! I'm just about to rip all my hair out @#$*#(%&@!! anyway a few weeks ago I decided to install Norton Antivirus 2004 pro and it has screwed my computer up the bum. My disk Defrag won't run and it's been very slow ever since. I am using service pack 1. I have uninstalled NAV using add/remove programs. Then I have also manually uninstalled NAV and all symantec crap. I have searched the registry for keys with "Symantec", "Norton" & "NAV" in them and deleted them. I still cannot run Disk Defragmentor, or even Diskeeper. I have started in safe mode and still nothing. I have run out of ideas . . I am about to rebuild, but I was wondering if there were any last resorts.

Because there appear to be conflicts causing the stoppage, try eliminating some of the potential conflicts using the links below. It may take a while to get through these steps but they are necessary.:

For Windows 2000/XP, ignore the first couple of sentences about checking "resources" in the link below but follow the rest of the procedures including the "Services" links at the bottom.

Next, clean out the junk files on the hard drive using this link:

Next, make sure that spyware and viruses aren't causing a problem by download, installing, updating, then running the free spyware tools from the links below:

Thanks heaps for that, last night I ran AVG and found a Trojan Horse downloader virus . . .it's all very depressing, my poor computer! I have tried to run adaware but it freezes, I left it running a disk check last night on startup and this morning it was still going! So I am just going to rebuild it. Start over clean and fresh. But thankyou so much for your help!
