Open the task manager and "close running tasks" that maybe hogging resources. Close those you don't need while running disk clean-up. At least that's a start, I rule out any other glitch for now. If that still fails, try the above again only allow the disk cleanup to run overnight, while you sleeo to see if an error message pops-up or it actually finishes. You need the windows taks, any other tasks, like CD s/w, firewall, etc can be off while you run it. If you have an always ON broadband, shut it off for the duration.

Common problem

In reply to: Disk Cleanup will not work

Try it with the "fix errors" turned off - if errors are found you can schedule a error check during bootup thereby avoiding other running tasks.
By having "fix errors" uncheck you also eliminate the problem if it cant fix the error as a least you get an error report stating what the error is and can take more serious measures.

An easy solution to that problem is to go to the link below and scroll down to line 48 and you'll see the ''Disk Cleanup - Compress Old Files Freezes'' Fix in the right column, download it and run it which should correct your problem.
Just click on the words ''Disk Cleanup-Compress Old Files Freezes'' not the underscored word ''Undo''.
''To use the Regedits: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt.

Below is a Microsoft link which explains what causes this problem and how to manually edit the registry to correct it.;en-us;812248&Product=winxp

The Fix at the first link does this without the need to manually edit the registry. Take your pick.
