Disk Cleanup not Responding

Mar 3, 2004 2:33AM PST

I have a 4 month old Compaq Presario S5300NX using Windows XP Home Edition. It has 2.5GHz Intel Pentium 4. Disk Cleanup just does not respond. The box that figures how much space you can save comes up, but doesn't do anything. It worked until this week. Help!! (Please)

Marti,

Have you tried running a few of the clean up options manually first??.

Start by cleaning out the "Temporary Internet Files" folder, then do a search for "*.tmp" (without the quotes) and delete all of the .tmp files on the computer. Next, open "My Computer", then RIGHT click on the C drive, choose 'Properties'. When that loads, click on the "Tools" tab, and choose to run the "Error Checking" option. When the little box loads, place a CHECK in BOTH boxes, then click OK. When the computer tells you that you must restart the computer to run that option, choose OK and restart the computer. Upon reboot the Error Checking program will automatically run. AFter it's finished, (it takes a little while to accomplish it's task), then follow the same path to the "Tools" tab and run Disk Defragmenter.

Hope this helps fix the problem.

This really has me baffled. The Temporary Internet Files folder had four folders which were empty:
6OR8EW12, BJPSURLT, P2Y9NZ3M, S7TBTTQ6. And there was one index DAT file. When I searched for the .tmp files I got the message "No results to display." (There was not even an empty folder.)
Could the computer be cleaning out the files even though the box that tells how much space can be saved (and then the results of the clean-up) never appears?

This GOOGLE finds it in a snap:

http://www.google.com/&q=XP+DISK+CLEANUP

The compression tests take forever and people think it's locked up. It can take minutes to days to complete. You'll find fixes in the former discussions.

In closing, it's not broken.

Would you mind checking the URL you posted? I got the message "This URL not found." Thanks.

Marti, An easy solution to that problem is to go to the link below and scroll down to 48 and you'll see the "Disk Cleanup - Compress Old Files Freezes" Fix in the right column, download it and run it which should correct your problem.

"To use the Regedits: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by right clicking on the file and selecting Edit".

HI
The response to download from kellys-korner is not the actual answer.
What happens here is that when U compress files you gain disk space & compressing file can give you around 75 - 125 MB or more disk space & by deleting it from the resgitry is not the solution

what kellys-korner does is that it deletes the compress old files from the registry.

Be careful

deleting registry key - you are losing valueable space of 75 - 100 or more MB

Gain HDD (Hard Disk Drive) space
Jan 8, 2007 3:50PM PST

whenever U install any software a restore point is created, u can gain very much space if u have not deleted restore points.

To do so...
go to My computer select any HDD right-click properties, in general tab click disk cleanup button. in disk cleanup select 2nd tab from left (I dont know the name cause i have administrative restrictions), in 2nd tab click the button delete all but most restore points.

This gains you around 1 - 2 GB of disk space if U usually install softwares & dont delete restore points.

Sorry for long message but I have to explain it properly.

exceed system performance (speeds up opening files)
Jan 8, 2007 4:01PM PST

if u have a slow PC (files take time to open) do the followng...

start>Accessories>system tools>disk defragmenter (open disk defragmenter)... select any volume & click defragment.

what happens...
when u open any file while closing it is save in different parts of an HDD and hence while opening the file windows searches for its parts.

defragmenting brings all the parts close enough that file opens faster.
