togen, I'm assuming you're usining Windows XP and disk cleanup is probably freezing when it's compressing old files. An easy solution to that problem is to go to the link below and scroll down to 48 and you'll see the "Disk Cleanup - Compress Old Files Freezes" Fix in the right column, download it and run it which should correct your problem.
Just click on the words "Disk Cleanup-Compress Old Files Freezes" not the underscored word "Undo".
"To use the Regedits: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt.

Below is a Microsoft link which explains what causes this problem and how to manually edit the registry to correct it.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;812248&Product=winxp

The Fix at the first link does this without the need to manually edit the registry. Take your pick.

Make sure to disable screen-savers, auto-matic updates and any software that may want to 'call-home' so to speak.

Anything that requies disk access will stop or fustrate your attempts to clean up your drive because when they access the drive (for any little thing), your clean-up utility see's that as something that's changed the drives contents (normally it writes the last time it tried to access files & or the internet). Thus, the common, I've tried to re-start 10 times, do you want to continue?, prompt.

To truely, clean up your drives, diconnect completely from the internet, disable or stop anything running in your system tray (the lower right-hand side of your screen) and then run your utilities. Let them run overnight while your sleeping, then turn off your machine, re-connect to the internet & re-boot your machine. It will be a happy camper after that.
