Disc Cleanup Freezes

I'm using W2000 Pro. (Sorry I wouldn't know where/how to look so as to give any more technical details).
When I try to do Disc Cleanup, it starts off okay trying to find out how much space will be saved by Cleanup. However, that's as far as it gets: it just sits at 'Compressing old files', and won't go any further.
The computer's going well enough generally, but it's not quite as fast as it was.
A friend tried Registry Cleaner - Abexo, I think - but it hasn't had any effect.

Disk Cleanup Tool Stops Responding While Compressing Old Files (This is for XP but it is the same for Win 2K which is NT 5 while XP is NT 5.1)

If you don't care to edit your registry follow this link and scroll down to line 48 right column and save that REG file to your computer. Double clicking it will perform the edit for you.

Thank you very, very much. Your tip worked like magic, and I nearly passed out with shock when my computer sailed through Disc Cleanup for the first time without any hassle at all. I had asked so many people for advice that I had lost hope.
