disappearing toolbar buttons in Outlook Express

Feb 23, 2004 12:28AM PST

When viewing the contents in my inbox, a few of the toolbar options just disappear? Unfortunately, one is the "delete" option. I know I can delete mail using the menu, but I'd like to fix this if possible. By the way, I am using Outlook Express 6 and Windows XP. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me...Gina

NEVER view all emails in Outlook Express
Feb 23, 2004 2:09AM PST

I strongly suggest you ask why I wrote such in the Security Forum. Even VIEWING AN EMAIL in Outlook (and Express) is dangerous.

Its best to turn off any preview and never open ANY email you don't know who its from.

The Security Forum can supply many examples why.

Having the same problem...
Sep 23, 2004 5:35AM PDT

FYI, the author never said she was viewing the content of an email in the preview pane. She said she was viewing the contents of her inbox (in other words, the list of messages).

Anyway, I'm posting beacuse I may have the same or a similar problem. Note that Gina said that the buttons "disappear". That's exactly what happens... they are there when I start Outlook Express, but later in the day some of the buttons have simply vanished.

To be more specific, it seems that each of the buttons is getting WIDER, and as they do, the last buttons simply drop off and vanish. No, there is no little arrow to get to them... although if I combine the button bar with the file menu bar, then I can access all of the buttons. So they are still there, they are just inaccessible! They aren't being removed through the options menu and they can't be added by selecting "customize" because they are already listed, they just can't be seen.

I'm wondering if this is due to some sort of spyware, browser plugin, virus, or some other software running on my machine. Any ideas?

FYI. Members rarely note all the details.

If you feel that I should never guess at such details, then I ask you never read my replies. I hope you understand.

As to ideas, I usually have to gather little more information but here's some simple fixit ideas.

1. Look up IEFIX on http://www.google.com and use it. It resolves many minor issues.

2. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;262552 notes an issue that afflicts people that have "reinstalled Windows".

3. Got BHO? Look up BHODEMON on google.com since I'm finding BHOs that do some very odd things. What's the fix? Actually this is advice. You should know what each BHO is.

I traced the problem to Yahoo IM.

Dear Gina, right click on the toolbar after you open the Inbox, and then click "Customize". From here you can add or remove items from the toolbar. This option is available in the Inbox view and also inside the emails themselves after they have been opened. Bye! Jimmy.
