Disappearing or ghost icons

Mar 2, 2004 4:44AM PST

This is the second time I've had this problem. My icons on my Start menu appear whited out, with a little color bleeding through on some of them. I've been told my icons were corrupted. The first time none of the solutions offered fixed it, it self-corrected when my computer was updating configuration files. Here are the fixes I have tried: restoring to an earlier time; deleting the shelliconcache; and a process that began with regedit, to Explorer, selecting a new String Value, naming it "max cached icons", giving it a value of 2048 and exiting.

These were instructions I was given by the MSN helpline. Nothing has worked. Any suggestions?

Did you try TWEAKUI's fix icon button?

What is tweakui? Sorry, you are dealing with an end user who learns what she needs to know as it comes up.

I went and got a free download of Tweakui, but was unable to open the file to use it; I was given an error message saying that I needed a disk labeled Tweakui inorder to access the file; if you can shed any light on this problem as well, I'd appreciate it, otherwise, I will have to live with the whited out icons.

Found Repair for Disappearing Icons!

IF YOU HAVE THIS PROBLEM: Go to your desktop, right click for menu, select active desktop, then customize, then select Effects, click on the box for Large Icons, it will make the change and provide uncorrupted icons; next, go back and uncheck the box; when your icons are reloaded at the reduced size, they too are no longer corrupted. So simple! Yippee!

The other and other than Tweakui method.

Another method is to select 640x480 display, ok... and change back.

Another is to select 256 colors, then change back.

Tweakui is just one of many methods, and one I choose since the tool can help in other ways. Some won't like the Display Properties methods...
