Disappearing Mouse

Aug 23, 2004 6:47AM PDT

There are times when my mouse disappears and I get no response. I can tab through web pages but nothing else. The mouse has been cleaned, the wire is fine, norton AV scan no viruses, I run adaware every day, and I have a zone alarm firewall, the crtl+alt+Del and then a shutdown works and sometimes even that does not help. System: Gateway select 800 AMD chip, 383MB RAM, Win 98 SE.

A test. Remove the case cover to sniff out a heat related issue.

Took your advice, removed cover and vacuumed out the case. I have run adadware, norton utilities from Norton System works, It still freezes up from time to time just not as freqent as before. When that happens the mouse freezes in place or the mouse moves but I cannot access any icons or buttons on tool bar.

That's your clue.

Now leave the cover off and see if the problem subsides further. As the machines age, some parts become heat sensitive. If it wasn't heat, your work would have had no effect.
