Disappearing Harddrive Icons

I have a iMac (Late 2010) and suddenly the icons for the Macintosh HD and the Backup icon disappeared. The Timemachine icon is still their. I have verified in the Finder preferences that they are turned on, I have reset the PRAM, run repair preferences and reinstalled the latest combo update (10.6.6) and they still don't show on the desktop. Turning the invisible files on and they show on the desktop. Has anyone run into this problem and have found a solution for it.
