disappearing drive

I have an external DVD writer connected via USB 2.0. I recently reinstalled windows and the drive seemed to be recognised at first and was visible in "my computer" but only after disconnecting and reconnecting the USB cable.

However, after shut down and switch on again the drive has disappeared. It returns A) after restart or b) if USB is disconnected and reconnected again.

Can anyone advise how this may be corrected permanently? (running windows XP pro)

This is kinda normal, I have a USB HD and somthimes I have to unplug it and replug it. Such is life. John
