Disappearing Downloads

by natws / March 28, 2006 3:23 AM PST

When I download software from the site the process appears to work correctly (I get the Save or Run box then the progressive download taper) but when the download completes, the file momentarily appears in the selected folder then disappears! I've switched off the XP Home firewall but no difference. I have Download.com in my Trusted Sites list. It makes no difference whether I try to Save or Run- in Save- the file disappears, in Run- nothing happens. I've tried the 'alternative download sites' option- exactly the same results. Any advice please

Try saving the download to your desktop and not putting in any folder. See what happens. I save all my downloads to the desktop. It makes it much easier to find and work with.

Bb, Have You Tried Different Browsers?

It sounds like you're using Internet Explorer. Have you tried using the free Firefox program from the link below? It could be that Internet Explorer is broken. Download the Firefox installer file to your desktop, then double click to install it. Once installed, access the download link and proceed with the download.

Hope this helps.

Progress so far
by natws / March 30, 2006 1:57 AM PST

Hmm, interestingly this dowload worked (I thought that because downloads don't work I'd have a chicken and egg situation). Anyhow I'm now away for a week or so I'll try using the browser when I return. Many thanks Bb.

OK, Now Try Repairing Internet Explorer...

There are a couple of ways to go about it:

1. First, try downloading and running the IEfix utilitiy from the link below:

IEFix Utility
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFIX.htm

2. If that doesn't do it, then reinstall Service Pack 2 for XP by using a SP2 CD or by downloading and running the "Full" SP2 installer from the link below. The download is extremely large, about 260 MB, so you'll need a broadband connection to get it done in a reasonable amount of time. After downloading the file, double click on the file and run it.. (By the way, since it takes so long to download the SP2 installer, you should consider burning it to a CD for later use if needed.)

Hope this helps.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
