disabling cd drive????

i have a cd and dvd drive fitted to my computer and am running xp. The cd drive is havin a mind of its own, it wont open, the red light on the cd drive comes on and the computer freezes, i want to disable it as i can play my games/cds via dvd drive. Also when i click open my computer the drive is not listed, i have searched for new hardware and it cant be found, how can i disable it apart from smashing it with a hammer, thanks Des. p.s i have no probs with the dvd drive

(NT) Power off, unplug wide cable from the back of drive. Boot up.

Hi Des
Here is what you should do
1>Power off your system and open the computer cover.
2>Pull out the data cable(wide ribbon like cable)and the power cable.
3>Unscrew the mounting screws and get the drive out.
P.S.- You can install a CD-RW Drive in its place.

Cheers Russel, i dont have a new cd-rw to install in its place yet, but i take it the computer should run ok on just the dvd drive till then. Its a cd-rw that i will be removing anyway , Des

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
