DirectX Problem

Jan 20, 2005 10:41AM PST

Since downloading latest version (9.0c) of DirectX I have been having problems with viewing games (sound is ok). Before going into details I want to make sure I am in the right forum. (I barely know what DirectX is).
My OS is 98SE and everything ran fine on the older version of DirectX. (Is 98SE comfortable with version 9.0c ?)
So, the first question is, am I in the right pew in the right church or right church but wrong pew? If it is the former please point me in the right direction. If the latter, let me know what else you need from me in order to help me.

RE: Direct X Problem
Jan 20, 2005 12:58PM PST

When running 98se I only use Direct X 8 My pc has a 500cpu. When running 9 it has problems. Check your Direct X by running its troubleshooter and doing all the tests.

Nick, I Did Run Tests And
Jan 20, 2005 10:00PM PST

The result was:

"Direct3D7 Test Results-Failure at step 32[user verification of Direct3D rendering] HRESULT=0=00000000[errorcode}"
In other words, I did not see the spinning cube. All I saw was a black full screen.

If 9 is the problem, how to I get 8 back?

I failed to mention I have 850cpu. (Not exactly cutting edge).

Your help is really appreciated.

DC, The Video Card Is Usually The Culprit
Jan 21, 2005 4:08AM PST

Quite a few older video cards and Windows 98 have issues with DirectX 9c. Although Windows 98 is supported, not all video cards work with it. At this point, if you don't have it already, you can download the older DirectX 8.0a from the link below:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/winme/Update/8.0a/W9XMe/EN-US/DX80eng.exe

Once the DirectX 8.0a installer file is downloaded to your desktop, then uninstall DirectX 9 using the DirectX Buster program below. (Microsoft says that you can't uninstall DirectX, but I have used this tool a few times and it's worked for me.) No guarantees, but it's worked for me on DX9 once. I think I ran it in "Safe Mode"...:

After version 9 is gone, reinstall version 8.

Hope this helps.

Grif, Good News/Bad News/Good News
Jan 21, 2005 9:37AM PST

The good news is I successfully removed DirectX9c and successfully installed DirectX8 using your instructions.
The bad news is it didn't help so I assume it must be the video card.
At least I now know where I am. Without your input I would not have known if the problem was DirectX 9 or the card.
The last good news, I have been wanting to get a better video card and now I can justify the purchase.
Thanks again, Grif. Your depth of knowledge coupled with your ability to present it will always amaze me.

...and reinstall of DirectX. Since you like playing games , a new video card will be fun.

Take care.

Re: Direct X

I went to the store and bought a new video card. I got an ati graphics card with its own memory chip. I did remove the Direct X 9 manually. It was so long ago though that I'm not really sure how I did it. (I was frustrated and had a couple of beers while doing it Happy )
