DirecTv to Laptop DVD-R

by Wodain / December 3, 2009 12:15 AM PST

I just got DirecTv with a R22 model DVR and unfortunately have run out of HD space for more programs. I am looking to transfer it to my laptop which is a HP dv9700 model. I wish to save my shows and movies to my DVD-R. I would also need info on what is a good free software to record with since I don't think I have anything on my laptop. The installer said to try a USB but from the other posts in this forum said it didn't work. In the R22 handbook it said the USB was for future use. I have S-video on the DVR and Laptop but that is just for video right? I was wondering if there was a cable maybe that would be RCA to USB maybe it might work?

DirecTV to Laptop DVD-R via USB
by justtrashemail / January 12, 2010 10:21 PM PST

Wodain -- I too was told by my installer you could convert from the DVR to DVD via the laptop ... he said there was actually software on the DirecTV web site, but I haven't been able to find it.

If anyone else has details on how to make this work, it would be much appreciated.

The content is all encrypted, so it's useless even if you can transfer it to a laptop. See the following thread-

http://74.125.95.132/search?q=cache:u6VIP7onpLcJ:www.greghughes.net/rant/UpgradedMyDirecTVHR21HDDVRTo1TBOfHardDriveStorage.aspx+directv+r22+export+video&cd=3&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us

You could however add a large external HDD (even multiple terabytes!) to increase the recording capacity. YMMV. The above thread also gives some tips on how to achieve this by using the eSATA port.

I'd also visit the satalliteguys forum. Excellent place to learn about the capabilities of these devices.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
