DirecTV, Tivo and Video Recorder

Dec 11, 2004 3:26AM PST

Is it possible to connect a DVD recorder to DirecTV with Tivo? If so, how and what brands of DVD recorders are recommended? I already have DirecTV with Tivo, but not a DVD player. I figured I should just buy the DVD recorder, however, I am having trouble getting a straight answer from anyone on how this will connect and work.
Thanks

I would like input on this as well. I have DirecTV with TiVo and would like to archive video but have gotten "yes you can"/"no you can't" from so many people, I am not sure where to start. How about it, TiVo veterans? Can you record DirecTV TiVo to a DVD recorder? Which one works the best?

Carrie1,
You can most definitely use a DVD recorder to archive shows from your DirecTiVo unit. All you need to do is hook up your DirecTiVo's s-video out to the s-video input on the DVD recorder. Then, using the "Save to VCR" (I can't remember the exact name) option on the TiVo, start playing the show on the TiVo and recording it with the DVD recorder.

This should give you pretty good quality recordings. Just remember, you will lose a bit of quality when you go from the DirecTiVo to the DVD recorder because of the digital to analog conversion that takes place.

As for brands, any DVD recorder with an s-video input will be up to the task.

Hope this helps.
