General discussion

DirecTV and RG6 0r RG59

Jul 11, 2009 7:23AM PDT

I am placing an order with Monoprice cables and have a problem with what kind of cables go from the DirecTV box to the TV (talking video component cables) are they RG 59 or RG 6 or does it make any difference?

I do know that the cables they run from your outside antenna to there DirecTV box are RG 6. At Monoprice you can get either, so there must be some difference. I believe they are RG 59 that everyone uses but heck I don't know!

RG6 Can't lose...

I am not sure if it makes any difference for the connection between the Direct TV box and your TV, but if you have a Tivo in the mix you want RG6 and actually it really will not hurt even if it is not required, it will still work.

However, on your broader question, if you are talking real component video cables as in a set of 3 cables with a red, blue, and green ends then you want to buy component video cables.

RG59 hits freq limits with new digital sat and even cable TV depending on the provider. With RG6 you really can't go wrong except you might pay more.

I would check with Direct TV, they have extensive help on their web site as well as you can just call and ask if you are a customer.
