Directory Sizes

May 20, 2005 2:02PM PDT

Is there a simple way to display the size of a folder including the sub-directories? I want to back up ''My Documents'' folder but the only way I can calculate the size is to open each sub-directory in DOS and add their sizes for a total.
Anyone know if a simpler way?

Thanks...

If you Right Click on any folder in My Computer and choose properties, it gives the total Size, No of Files And Number of Sub Directories.

Bill,

I didn't know what Ramusson just learned me. Working with Windows 95 for 7 years now (at home, even longer at work) and still learning this basic stuff.

Two programs showing it graphically:
- clduw from http://sourceforge.net/projects/scrapware.
- i.disk from http://www.snapfiles.com/get/idisk.html (only LOOK, don't use it to delete files)
There must be a lot of other comparable programs, but I find these two free ones to be good enough for the purpose.

Hope this helps.

I use Explorer. . .

It shows all folders and their subs. You can open any folder, display it on the right, and drag and drop whatever you want. Or, as was mentioned, use the right click to display total sub folders, files, and sizes.

Backing up the entire My Documents folder is unnecessary, it can be extremely large. When I do a backup to DVD, I just open Explorer and drag and drop what I want.

Good luck,

Directory Size - in DOS mode / prompt
May 21, 2005 8:11PM PDT

If you are conversant with DOS mode / Prompt, then
to find the size of a specific folder (directorY and it's
sub-folders, type at the folders's prompt (e.g.:
C:\MyDocu~1

dir /s (omit /s, if you don't want include
sub-folders

Keep hitting enter or page down keys, until the end

The displayed info. is correct, compared to what you
can gather at Windows Explorer, which uses 1024 bytes
= 1 KB
