Question

Directory - Folder & File listing and organizing

Jul 9, 2011 2:05AM PDT

I'm trying to organize and clean up 15 years worth of data and photos and more. My eyesight is failing, and I find it easier when I can print out lists. My computer is my big, wonderful file cabinet, but it is a mess. I am still trying to learn how to use Karen's Directory Printer (from her PowerTools), but it is not as easy as I thought it would be.....Any advice ? PS..Free if possible (my hospital bills have left me bankrupt)

Clarification Request
Karen's Directory Printer

Hi Sunnydays.

Karen's Directory printer is an often recommended utility in these forums, and it is as simple as it comes.

Now, I admit I have never used it myself, but looking at The Web site, and the image there, I can see that I open the application, click on the "Print" tab, then under the section called "Select a folder", navigate to the folder I want to print out, then click the "Print" button.

There may be other settings that can refine that, but you can use those by trial and error.

There is a walk-through in the link below if that helps;

That's a great start

Good work in getting this far Sunny Days. I realise that this is all new to you.

Now, about printing out the file onto paper using your printer.

I am a bit surprised to see you mention Microsoft's XPS Document Writer, and it is not what I would have used to print out this file to paper.

That "HowtoGeek" web site shows that the file generated is a .txt file. This is a file with some name or other, (I assume you can choose your own file name), with the .txt file extension, eg MyList.txt

That TXT file extension is a basic Text file and you should be able to double click that file to open it in Windows own Notepad. From within Notepad, go to File > Print, and that should print the file via your printer onto paper without any problem.

No need to use Microsoft XPS Document Writer at all.

Does that help?

Mark,

<div>Thanks for your advice. I haven't been back to CNET since July - later in that month I had to check in to local hospital so they could do a tune-up on the old ticker.
