diminishing available ram in windows me

by jayinsat / March 19, 2004 2:33 AM PST

My machine is an e-machine with a 667 mhz processor. I have 256 mb ram, 40 GB hard disk. I am running SBC DSL. I have noticed that my available ram continues to diminish as I operate programs. It starts out at about 67% on reboot. I have only critical programs loading on startup (Zone Alarm, antivirus, sound, Adaptec cd creator, Lexmark printer.) The available ram slowly diminishes to about only 45% (with no programs activly running) after about 3 days. Why does this happen?

The issue of memory management was not resolved. You also may find the an application such as a firewall will leak memory.

The "why?" is simple. Programs you are running are leaking. You get to find the leak. I must ask why you are running Zone Alarm. It does leak on every machine 98/ME I've found and we can discuss what it's saving the machine from.

I thought Zone Alarm was a good firewall program. Besides, It came free with my SBC/YAHOO DSL. Are you suggesting that it is worthless? I am new to the whole highspeed internet access. Also, how do I find and repair the memory leaks? Any help is appreciated.

Yes. ZA is a good firewall program. It's great to see what's calling home and blocking that. BUT it can leak memory. And there is no known exploit its saving you from on a Windows 98/ME OS with the network sharing turned off and a Windows Update of one item.

1. You find the memory leak by uninstalling the suspect item.

2. Unless you are the author and programmer of the program in question, you can't fix the leak.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
