DiLink usb/Pres. 5050

I need help installing a d-link dwl-g122 into a Compaq Presario 5050 running win 98,ie 6.The driver install works fine from the cd,but the comp does not recognize the usb adapter when I plug it in.When I restart the d-link icon appears in the system tray with a black x on it , then disappears. When I hover the mouse over this icon it says no "CARD" found?I installed the Compaq wireless usb config software from their site for the 5050,but this doesn't even open when i click the icon....it won't start .

Any help would be appreciated....

I see this when.

Someone installed Windows 98se. Most forget about all the motherboard and chipset support drivers from the laptop's maker. To make matters more fun we will see device manager with no complaints but the ports still don't work.

Hint? The OS and support drivers must be installed proper since Microsoft doesn't do this for us.
