I'm afraid that all you can do is to scan those letters and save them as jpg (picture) or pdf. Forget about searching until they are retyped manually.
I have many old letters from my grandmother, mother and other family members that I would like to digitize - especially since letter writing is a lost art. I would like to share these with living family members also.
I am placing the letters in PVC clear folders by year and by the person. Is there special software we should purchase? Is there a company somewhere who will digitize the letters for us at a reasonable price. We would like the results in a searchable format.
