Question

Digital sound from tv apps

Sep 8, 2017 3:21AM PDT

TV is UA43MU6100WXXY connected to Cambridge TV5(V2) soundbase via optical cable. Nothing else connected to TV. TV connected to internet via wifi. Sound from apps (via wifi) comes through TV speakers but not soundbase. Soundbase works fine with signal through aerial. Thoughts?

Answer
Some apps don't honor TV settings.

For example Netflix may have it's own sound settings. Look around.

No options to change sound on apps.

I've been using iview and sbs on demand - they don't have options to change sounds. Also no optical sound from internet or you tube. Haven't tried others

Now you have a deep issue.

Deep issue indeed

I just discovered I don't get sound through optical cable for two free to air HD stations either. Some free to air HD stations do have sound through optical cable so very strange. Will be calling Samsung when the football is over !

THAT MIGHT BE ANOTHER ISSUE

I find that many of these require us to change the Audio from HD to plain Stereo or "PCM."

The why this happens is too long to explain so the short answer is not all HD audio that we can send over optical can be decoded by the receiver.

Optical setting already on PCM

The setting on the TV optical output is already PCM. The speakers only accept this input

Time to talk to Samsung directly.

So the short answers are Firmware, settings, settings in TV and app and PCM.

You may have the first Samsung I've heard to not send app sound over optical. Most of the time folk write back they found it. (it being the app or TV setting.)
