Seen them and a great idea. Downside?

300 bucks for a picture frame that could walk off my desk, so I didn't buy it. But it is on the list for some non-PC based window display (store displays.)

In direct answer to your question, an old laptop has been cheaper if you can find an old 286/386/486. It's my current solution.

i bought my grandmother a ceiva frame 2 years ago and it has been the best present she ever received. she is very techno-phobic and except for a tv has no real modern gadgets. she really loves getting the pics from her family. my sisters are way out of state but with the frame she sees them regularly. now having said that i personally don't have one. i don't like the subscription fee for someone like me who could load the pictures myself. for someone like my grandmother it is perfect though!

i too am interested in alternatives to ceiva and am surprised there aren't more!

I had a Ceiva given to me and I bought one for my dad. This is a great way to get photos to someone quickly. They don't have to do anything other than leave it connected to a phone line (a splitter is included so it isn't a dedicated line) or connect it periodically and let the software grab new pictures.

The upside is anyone you authorize can add pictures no matter where they are. They upload them to a website and the Ceiva grabs them. The downside is the annual subscription. Those that you load directly with a media slot are great if you are physically there. SO there are differing needs being met.

All in all I like it and will be renewing subscriptions soon.
