Digital Coaxial to 5.1 speaker system

Feb 7, 2005 4:05PM PST

How can I connect from a digital coaxial output to 5.1 speaker system (present)? Do I also need a decoder to seperate the 5.1 signal? If so is there a cheap decoder to gte me by untill I can afford something better or even new system?

...if you have an audio source that supplies that digital coax connection, then check the back of your AV Receiver to see if it also has a digital coax connection. If you tell me what kind of receiver you have, I could let you know rather quickly.

just like the other guy said check your reciever to see if it has digital coax. Your sound system should also tell you if its 5.1 capable. If it 5.1 capable then it will decode it itself and you should have a much imroved sound over the 2 channel analog you get with rca jacks

Digital Coaxial to 5.1

I have exactly the same problem. Have a Dvd player with optical, digital coaxial outputs, but home cinema doesn't have those inputs, and it doesn't decode dolby or dts. Do I need a decoder and if so where could I get a cheap one?
Thanks in advance

what do you mean by "home cinema" ? If you mean your speaker system & receiver that you have at your house... then yes... I would definitely get an upgrade to something that has at least optical inputs (& perhaps a coax digital input as well). You can probably find something that meets these requirements for real cheap on clearance at best buy or circuit city. I can't imagine any receiver these days that doesn't have optical inputs or can't decode dolby. haha. here are some examples of CHEAP receivers:

there are half a dozen on that page that are $199 or under. do you have surround sound speakers? (in other words, do you have at least 5 speakers?)
