Digital Cameras with Panoramic Capabilities

Dec 18, 2009 2:11PM PST

I'm IN SEARCH OF a Digital Camera with USER FRIENDLY Panoramic capabilities. Most I have looked at you must take two or more photos and just mesh the photos together with software on your PC. Does anyone know of any Digital Cameras out there which you can just simply take a picture and simply print it out or have it developed how you see it (as a panoramic). Any insight or information would be greatly appreciated. I've spent numerous hours on various sites looking and reading through one review after another without any luck, so if anyone knows of any helpful websites please pass it on to me. Thank you so much (in advance)

lots of choices

I know that Canon makes a number of cameras that do panoramic, all from ultra-compact to high end point and shoots. I'm sure many of the other brands have this too.

Panoramic Cameras

I have not heard of a digital camera that will function in the manner you want.

There are specialty cameras that have been built over the years that did take true panoramic pictures, but they were all 35mm film cameras.
They were actually a motorized lens assembly that would rotate in sync with the movement of the film.
The printing process was also special.

Of course, you have to have the camera on a tripod and nobody/anything can move for several seconds.

Panoramic pictures have been around for just about 100 years.
Almost all are done by combining a number of still pictures.

That is how digital cameras make panoramic pictures.

Some cameras have a panoramic mode whereby the camera helps you select the amount of overlap and also locks certain key exposure adjustments during the process.

Software is used to stitch the photos together.

I have done several panoramic photos with good results.

Here is a history of Panoramic Photography:

Most of the Canon cameras have "panorama assist", where it shows you how much to overlap the shots and locks the important exposure settings so they remain constant while taking the overlapping shots.
It also comes with "stitching" software to splice the photos together.

For low cost and good photos, look at the Canon A1100IS.
For a slightly smaller camera look at the Canon SD series of cameras.

There are many good choices, but I am not sure about them having a "panorama assist" mode.

If you need a good photo viewing and manipulation program, check out "Irfanview".
It is excellent and free.
