Question

Digital camera good for pics of kids

Nov 21, 2011 2:39AM PST

I am looking to buy a new compact point and shoot camera and there are way too many options so I need your help! My budget is max $250 ($150-200 would be the best since I usually get a new camera every two years. I use it mainly to take pictures of my kids.
The one I'm looking at is this... Canon PowerShot ELPH 300 HS so please let me know if this would be a good choice or if you have better options!

My requirements: (Pardon me I don't know the tech terms!)

While reading reviews I did come across the 310 instead and it does sound like a better camera. Do you know if it would be good with my requirements?

-Auto Settings - The Elph 310 can be used without using any manual controls.
You can choose modes that will improve the results for special situations (beach, snow, etc).

-Moving Kids - Use a sports mode for active kids.

- Continuous shooting - lets you capture events live a person sliding into home base.
Then you pick the best one or show them all to see the event in multiple pictures.
Switching to video capture is even better.
**If you are using flash, it takes a couple of seconds between shots for the flash capacito to recharge.
That is necessary on all cameras - Even the $1,000 cameras.

- Battery Life - Is about average which is over 200 shots on a charge.
You can always buy an extra battery if you see the need for even more photos.
For a longer battery life, you will have to buy a larger camera.
A larger camera has a larger battery.

- Rugged, "sort of" - There is no such camera.
Rugged - each camera company makes at least one camera that is classified as rugged.
Generally the picture quality is below par for rugged cameras, and adds about $100 to the cost of the camera.
Use the camera carefully and it will last a long time.

- Wants - Everything that is on your list.
