General discussion

digital camera closeups

Sep 14, 2005 6:31PM PDT

wondering if anyone knows of a digital camera that can take a good closeup of a stamp or a coin. I have a couple Kodaks, but any pic I try of something small comes out blurry. what spec in the camera features relates to how small an object it can sharply define. Or is this the domain of 35 mm cameras with close-up lenses. Thanks, Jerry M.

Macro Photography

Any digital camera with macro ability can take a photo of a stamp or coin. And most digital cameras have macro ability.

Just check the specifications for the camera and look for ''Macro Focus Range''.

Example:

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Nikon/nikon_cp5600.asp

The Nikon 5600 shows a Macro Focus Range of 4cm (4 centimeters = about 1.6 inches).

Your stamp or coin can be as close as 1.6 inches from the lens of the Nikon 5600 camera, when the lens is put in macro mode.

The secret of getting a blur free shot is; lots of light and a tripod.

It is near impossible to hand hold the camera steady enough to prevent blurring when using macro. Use a tripod or sit the camera on a solid object.

Using a light(s) will improve the quality of the shot.
Do not use flash.
Flash is not helpful because you are too close to the target.

My Canon 4500 has a great macro ability. It seemed like

I could get closer than an inch and still focus. Although I recently saw one in Bestbuy, I don't think the 4500 is still being made. I got mine on eBay.
