digi cam + webcam

Aug 7, 2004 4:11PM PDT

Can digital cameras be used as webcam also. Mny digicams come with videa recoding facility these days. In fact sony dsc-t1 comes with cradle. can it be used as webcam also. Otherwise its too good 5megapixel camera.

If the camera comes with the feature, yes.

But here's why it's not a good feature. To get the size down, the unit is designed for less than 100% duty cycle. That is, it should overheat if used for more than say, 15 minutes. If not, then the camera size goes up to deal with heat issues and maybe for a next size up battery.

As this is how it is, I would dismiss such a feature simply because an USB web cam is in the 20 buck range and I'd rather have a better lightweight camera.

am interested in doing the same on a win98 pc.

That's not a web cam.

That's a digital camera that is optimized for less than 24x7 usage. Sone rightfully doesn't supply a web cam application since such small cameras will overheat and fail inside the warranty period if used as a web cam.

You'll want a web cam.
