Difficult in Retaining Formatting in Word 2003

by musawwir / March 11, 2008 7:46 PM PDT

I am editing a large scholarly manuscript. It has many footnotes in which the book titles are italicized.

For some reason that I don't understand, when I save the file, some (not all) of the italicized titles in the footnotes randomly become roman (i.e, are no longer italicized).

I have never experienced anything like this--and it is serious because I have to submit a disk with the file to the publisher.

Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing this.

Many thanks for your responses.

Just noting

1. What Service Release are you running with? (the patches from Microsoft.)

2. This can and should happen if I take a doc from one machine to another as Word reformats the document to match that printer's capabilities. The worst happens when the next machine has no printer driver installed. That's not a bug!

3. To retain formatting for viewing by others, produce a PDF for them. Keep your .DOC for your use.

Thanks very much for your helpful response--and for a workable solution.

FYI: the file was created on an Apple platform, and I am working on it on my PC.

That explains it.

I think we see it now... Not only the machine and printer changed but across platforms you could lose a font or two.
