Dialup speed

Apr 15, 2008 12:21AM PDT

I have XP pro and every time I connect I get the same speed reading (115200). Thats what I have my modem set at. Is that why I get the same reading all the time or do I have to set it lower? If I can't fix that, is there a widget or some small app. that I can use that doesn't take up resources? Thanks, Bill.

That speed. . .

is the speed between the modem and the system, NOT dial up speed. You can leave it like it is as it has no effect on dial up speed.

Dial up speed is limited by many factors, mainly the distance between you and the telephone central office. See the explaination at my site below. And there is nothing you can add on or tweak to change the physics of the telephone cable pair.

Dialup speed

Thanks for the reply. I was using XP Home and it was reading the speed (between 41 and 49K). I just want to be able to read my speed being that I'm on dialup it makes a difference with just a few K.

41-49 is a good speed. . .

You're in the top 10 percent. The majority is in the low 30s to high 20s.

It sounds like...

you want a continuous bandwidth monitor. Check out Bitmeter II, but it does take 15-20MB of memory depending on how you configure it.

If you need something that uses no resources, I can only suggest CNET's Bandwidth Meter (a website).

Dial-up speed

Hi: You DEFINITELY are getting good speed. If I was getting that I would swear my ISP had installed High-speed. I get 31.2 Kpbs
