Dialup / Modem problem

Feb 19, 2004 3:19AM PST

Win XP Home - 750Mhz Duron - Compaq
It was upgraded over ME
It was working for months.
4 days ago, the dialup software ..ATT dialup..
reported that the modem was not configured.

I installed Netzero software and get the same result.
There are no modems in the list to pick a modem from.

If I try to make a connectoid in Network Connections,
dialup is greyed out. LAN is the only option.

However if I use Hyperterminal, it dials out OK.
Diagnostics in Control Panel shows the modem OK as well. It can query the modem and receives the
standard replies from the modem.

I have deleted the modem and installed a different brand of modem and still the same.

After this occurred the owner did a repair install,
wiping out any restore points prior to monday.
There is currently no spyware or virus on the machine.

I suspected a virus. She was getting a
"rpcss" error and a countdown to where the internet was disconnected. Sounds like Blaster, however I have run the fixblaster file from symantec and stinger from
McAffee and it has antivirus running all the time.

Did Adaware and Spybot.
I left the machine with SP1a installing. I haven't talked to her since I left.

Thanks for any help.

FYI: Blaster is a worm. It and its kind are not stoped with an Antivirus.

You can research the details, but without SP1, reinfection is too easy. Just connect to the internet and blammo.

Sp1a is installing as I speak.
It is not on the internet, can't get dialup to work.

I already checked for it and don't have it.
I installed the blaster patch as well.

LAN? LAN? LAN? LAN? LAN?

If this machine is on any LAN, the WORM can be on another machine and blammo.

Well, Bob... er Luke...
She just called me and after SP1a installed. the dialup started working.. Damaged file somewhere I suppose.

I didn't actually connect with hyperterminal and now I suppose I don't need to go back there and try but thanks anyway.

No it isn't on a LAN, standalone Compaq disaster.

She has been online for about half hour so it is working. Told her to go get the rest of the critical updates.

Thanks

Yes. Installing SP1 has been noted to fix it too.

Many files are replaced, updated and registry items set.

Hopefully they'll install a firewall and learn how to use it without cutting their connections off.
