dialling up to the internet without being prompted

Mar 28, 2004 8:46PM PST

Why does my computer dial up to the internet at various irregular times during the day when I have not prompted it to? I have tried removing extra dial up numbers and my "Dial whenever a network connection is not present" is not checked.

Should I check "Never dial a connection" or will this prevent me from connecting even when I want to?

I am getting very frustrated by this since I share the line with the telephone and friends cannot contact me while I am on line.

Would appreciate help in idiot's language!

(NT) You can make a short-cut to the dial-up connection to dial-up.

Re:dialling up to the internet without being prompted. Be sure your machine doesn't have a TROJAN DIALER.

paulined, from experience, this happened to me a few years ago and it can be several things, a program may be trying to check for updates in the background, some program you recently installed might be trying to automatically connect to the internet, etc. Check the settings for any recently installed programs and see if there is an option to automatically check for updates or connect to the internet. Unfortunately my problem was that my computer acquired a trojan virus that was dialing up the internet to open a "back door" to the hacker that wrote it so he could have access to my computer. Don't feel bad if this is the case, Microsoft got hit by the same virus I had, so it can happen to anyone. Solution for this is to update your virus definition files and run a virus check on all files on you hard drive. (not just program files) If you have a virus, your anti-virus software should detect it. Good luck.

1. When a modem is installed and the AutoDial feature is enabled, any Winsock-aware application installed can make access to the Internet, which can be circumvented by setting the Never dial a connection to Null (unchecked) in Internet Explorer (Tools, Internet Options, Connection tab). If you rather not, it is entirely up to you to read the documentation included with installed programs to ascertain which may have features set to automatically check for updated components or Web pages and configure them so they do not start automatically. If you decide to disable this feature and then want Internet access, connect by using the Microsoft Network desktop icon or the icon for your Internet service provider (ISP), and then start Internet Explorer.

2. Please note that just above the text editor (where you enter a question on the forum) is the following paragraph, and if certain information is not present in your question, our reply may not be of much help:

Tip: If you are asking for help to troubleshoot a computer-related problem, please be sure to include all the necessary information (ie: operating system, model number, hardware, software, etc) that will help others identify your problem for a speedy resolution.
